Although studies of virtual healthcare are relatively scarce, revolutionary attempts to reform the NHS healthcare are unfolding online via 3D virtual hospitals in Second Life. The collaborative work Second Health by UK’s National Physical Laboratory and Imperial College London forecasts a vision of how healthcare environments of the future could exist within the metaverse. The virtual hospital, based on a 2007 report detailing Professor Ara Darzi’s vision Healthcare for London won recent public approval in May 2008 and brings Second Health one step closer to reality, revolutionizing treatment and care across a private network of over 150 polyclinics.
